In 1995, reliable Internet access was virtually nonexistent in Smyth County and the surrounding communities. Seeing an opportunity to connect local families and businesses, SmythNet owner Michael Perdue had a vision: bring Internet service to the people of Smyth County.

That vision began with a brief partnership with a local businessman. After several months, Michael decided to pursue the idea independently and build a business of his own.

In the fall of 1996, SmythNet opened its first storefront and began providing Internet service through the technology available at the time—dial-up Internet. While dial-up was an important first step in bringing Internet access to the community, it was slow and often unreliable, and it quickly became clear that customers needed something better.

Michael began researching an emerging technology known as Fixed Wireless Internet. With limited resources, he slowly acquired equipment and began testing the technology. What started as an experiment would eventually become the foundation of SmythNet's future.

Providing wireless Internet is far more complex than simply installing an antenna. A reliable wireless network depends on an interconnected system of servers, network equipment, antennas, towers, and customer equipment—all working together to deliver service to homes and businesses.

Over the years, SmythNet has continued to build and expand that network. Today, wireless Internet is the primary focus of SmythNet, with more than 22 towers/relays providing connectivity throughout the region. And we're not finished yet.

Our plans are to continue expanding the network and reaching more rural communities—bringing fast, reliable Internet to areas that traditional providers have often overlooked.

What began with a vision in 1995 has grown into a locally owned Internet service provider committed to keeping our communities connected.
